A bet between friends, judged by the friends in it

Write what the bet is about, list the answers it can have, and share the code. Everyone who joins backs one answer, and the people in the bet vote on what happened.

What a bet is made of

Six parts, and the creator writes all of them before anybody else sees the bet.

A description

What the bet is about, in the creator's own words: a question, a claim, a dare, an event to be judged. Everyone in the bet reads it exactly as written, because the jury judges the words.

Two to ten outcomes

The answers the bet can have, listed by the creator in the order they should be read. They should not overlap, and it is the creator who makes sure they do not.

One amount and one unit

Ten dollars, fifty points, a round of beers: whatever the players agree on, and the same for everybody in the bet. retao shows it and does nothing else with it.

One position each

Everyone who joins backs exactly one outcome, the creator included. Nobody holds two, so everybody on the other outcomes is betting against you.

A jury

Everyone in the bet, plus anyone the creator names to judge without competing. It decides when more than half of its members name the same outcome.

A code

The bet's code is how people get in. Type it, or open the link built from it, read the bet as it stands, and back an outcome.

Three moments

A bet is being prepared, then it is set, and then it is done.

01

Preparing

The creator writes the description, the outcomes, the amount and the unit, backs an outcome, and shares the code. Whoever opens it joins by backing an outcome, and can switch or leave. Nobody votes yet.

02

Set

The creator locks the board. The wording, the outcomes, the amount, the people, their positions and the jury are frozen from that moment. The jury votes, and a juror may change their vote.

03

Done

More than half of the jury has named one outcome. The board records that outcome and shows who stood on each one. Nothing else happens.

One bet, start to finish

The shape is the same whether a bet has two answers or ten.

01

Ana prepares "I run 10 km before Sunday" for 10 dollars and backs Yes.

02

Beto and Carla open her bet by its code and each back No.

03

Ana sets the bet. The three of them are the jury.

04

On Sunday, Beto and Carla vote No. Two of three is more than half, so the bet is done with No as its outcome.

What Ana owes Beto and Carla, in dollars, is between the three of them.

What stays between friends

retao prepares the bet, locks it, records the jury's answer and shows who stood where. The rest is yours.

Settling up

retao holds nothing of value, in any unit, and never moves, converts or works out what anybody owes. Who pays whom, and in what, is the participants' business.

Deciding what happened

There is no house and nobody outside the bet with a say in it. Every bet is judged by the people who were in it, and by nobody else.

The pace

Nothing expires and nothing closes on a clock. The creator sets the board, the jury ends the bet whenever it gets there, and a jury one vote short reads as waiting rather than as failing.

Who sees it

A bet is visible to the people in it and to whoever holds its code. There is no group to join, no feed and no public timeline.
